Asics Magic Speed 3: Race Day Versatility
Asics' tempo trainer bridges training and racing. Does it excel at both?
Asics Magic Speed 3
by Asics
$169.99
The Asics Magic Speed 3 is designed for both tempo training and race day. With a carbon plate and FF BLAST PLUS cushioning, it aims for versatility. After 150 miles including two races, here's my review.
FF BLAST PLUS Performance
The foam provides good energy return and cushioning. It's responsive enough for racing but comfortable enough for tempo training. This balance is the Magic Speed's strength.
Carbon Plate Versatility
Unlike aggressive racing plates, the Magic Speed's plate is mild enough for training but still provides propulsion for racing. This makes it usable for both purposes.
Race Performance
I raced a 10K and half marathon in these. They performed well, though not quite as fast as dedicated racers. For tempo workouts, they're excellent.
Value Assessment
At $150, these are cheaper than premium racers but more expensive than basic trainers. The dual-purpose capability provides good value.
